The most popular landrace strain from East Africa is the Kilimanjaro sativa that grows in northern Tanzania. A joint will make you feel mentally re-energized and achieve a high level of alertness that can last for a couple of hours. However, if you visit countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, or Uganda, you’ll come across various high-energy East African sativa strains.
4 High-Energy East African Sativa
1. Masisi Sativa
This landrace sativa is cultivated by Congolese residing in eastern Congo, near the city of Goma. When you roll up a joint of the Masisi and do a dry pull, you’ll taste a unique woody/spicy flavor. The buds are dark green in color with a few orange pistils scattered on the surface.
I smoked this strain in August 2024 during a strain hunt in Goma city. It was around 9PM, and I was sluggish after a long day of hiking and visiting a few tourist attractions. I only smoked a small regular-size joint, but five minutes later the weariness had disappeared!

What I felt was similar to the first time I took an energy drink. My mind felt jump-started, and I was refreshed like how it feels after taking a cold shower after a morning run. The body-high is also similar to what I experienced mentally.

2. Ethiopian Shashamane
When you hold these buds close to your nose, you will smell a combination of lemon and spicy/masala. This sativa activates around five to ten minutes after smoking a J, and what you’ll notice is the upbeat mental energy, clarity, and increased alertness.
What I like about the Shashamane is that the high can last up to two hours. This makes it a good daytime sativa that enables you to accomplish your tasks without requiring smoke breaks during the day.

The body high manifests in the form of an energizing buzz and some tingling in the arms. However, the only downside is the strong munchies that are hard to ignore, so make sure you eat sufficiently before you smoke the Shashamane.

3. Kilimanjaro Sativa
I rank this Tanzanian landrace strain highly based on how long I’ve smoked it without getting tired of it. It’s no wonder that people who smoked Kilimanjaro during the 80-90s are eager to find the seeds and grow them.

The mental upbeat energy this variety produces is similar to the Ethiopian Shashamane. If the Shashamane’s sativa high is at an 8/10, the Kilimanjaro is around 7/10. What I noticed is that the body high produced by the Kilimanjaro feels like a warm buzz that disappears after an hour.

4. Ruthsuru Sativa
The Congolese living near the thick forests bordering western Uganda grow and sell this landrace sativa. It’s a long-flowering sativa that takes six months outdoors to finish; however, due to high demand for this strain, most growers harvest the buds prematurely around the fifth month.
My first time smoking the Rutshuru was during my strain hunt trip in Goma. The buds have a dominant woody smell and taste that you’ll detect during a dry pull, and while exhaling smoke. Similar to the Masisi sativa, the Rutshuru produces a quick, noticeable high after five minutes.

I remember feeling alert and refreshed as if my brain had jump-started. Itfelt like my thoughts prior to smoking had been erased, and my mind felt blank but in a good way.
